Book Cover Redesign

For this project, we were commissioned to redesign the book cover for Ayn Rand's classic novel "Anthem." The story is set in a dystopian future where individualism is suppressed, and the concept of the self is unknown. It follows the journey of Equality 7-2521, a young man who rediscovers the idea of the individual and the value of independent thought. Our task was to create a powerful visual representation that captured the essence of this thought-provoking narrative. We needed to convey the themes of personal freedom, the struggle against collectivism, and the quest for knowledge through a striking and symbolic cover design. The challenge was to encapsulate the depth and complexity of the story while also enticing readers with a bold, contemporary aesthetic that would resonate with both longtime fans and newcomers to Rand's influential work.

This book cover highlight’s how in the story is set in a collectivist society the word “I” and “me” were forbidden use in their place were the words “we” and “us”. The book cover depicts the usage of the word “I” and these people are meant to symbolize each individual. The lightbulb symbolizes new ideas in the story which the main character develops as the story progresses. Aligning with the yellow line from the back of the book forms an even larger “I”.
